The Pedasi area has amazing fishing and you can fish here all year round. They don’t call it “The Tuna Coast” for nothing! The best time for fishing the Pedasi area is from May to December (the “wet” season), but you can also fish in the dry season from December to May. During the dry season you fish close to the shore along the southern edge of the peninsula, and only in the early morning due to the strong northerly winds that generally produce rough seas later in the day. The average water surface temperature is between 82 and 84ºf. The water is colder and darker in the dry season (due to upwelling that occurs during that time of year).

All year long you can catch a variety of different fish species in Pedasi (for a complete list see below). But during the period from June to January you can catch Dorado, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Marlin. The best months of the year for fishing are October and November due to more rainfall and driftwood in the sea. During January and Febuary the best fish to catch are Corvina and Robalo.

Most fishing around Pedasi is done in a basic Panga style boat. There are, however, various other styles of boats available for charter to suit the particular needs of most fishermen.

Most of the fish off the coast of Pedasi can be caught with light or heavy spinning gear, especially cubera snapper, roosterfish, jacks and tuna. You can use poppers inshore and offshore along with other types of casting lures for salt water. It is recommended to 50 and 80 lb test braid line.

Under the proper weather conditions, fly fishing can also be a great option. You can catch the same species mentioned above. Jigging is best for catching amberjack but can also be used to go after snapper, grouper, tuna, and sharks. The best depth for jigging is in the range from 100 to 150 feet. Diamond or butterfly jigs are popular, and you can also use bigger heavier spoons.

For Inshore trolling, lures are generally used because most of the fishing boats in the area (pangas) do not have live wells. Dark colored lures work better during the wet season, and light colored lures are best during the dry season. Some common types of lures used in Pedasi include Rapala Magnum’s, cedar plugs, tuna clones, and jet heads. When fishing from a boat with a live well, green jacks are the bait of choice. For inshore trolling, it’s recommended to use 30 lbs trolling equipment.

Offshore you can find great trolling action about 10 miles out. Out here you will find black and blue marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado and tuna.
